Wallacewell Quadrant is a new-build social housing development located in Balornock in North-East Glasgow on the site of a former care home. Working with the Loretto Housing Association we developed a brief for 44 houses including 18 flats, 10 cottage flats and 16 houses, two of which have been specifically designed for residents with complex needs.
The site presented a number of challenges including a significant area of the site lying in an area of flood risk, which has been incorporated into the landscape design working with erz Landscape Architects.
A dense site layout creates a more urban than sub-urban feeling environment through the use of terraced housing and a variety of sizes and types of housing throughout the development. A new z-shaped road allowing access to the site works in conjunction with the carefully positioning of the buildings to create a series of terminated vistas and a sense of enclosure with houses and landscaped areas to both sides of the street.
